1. Strategic research & development

• Conceptualize, design and conduct research and development activities that will inform the processes of adoption of agroforestry innovations and their impact on smallholder farmers;
• Undertake strategic analyses of the economic feasibility, profitability, and social acceptability of agroforestry options.

2. Communication of science for impact

• Generate global public goods through synthesis and publication of research results.
• In collaboration with partners, produce reader-friendly and capacity building materials, including policy briefs.
• Establish linkages with strategic institutions to create awareness to facilitate the use of results of science and development of agroforestry to users.

3. Capacity building

• Mentor and technically backstop ICRAF and national/partner scientists in southern Africa.
• Supervise graduate students' field research and thesis writing

4. Resource mobilization and administration

• Prepare proposals to funding agencies to support our research and development activities.
• You will be expected to take up some management and administrative duties as well.

Job description
The GIS officer will be responsible to provide the technical support related to GIS activities that are included in all the projects implemented by COOPI in Malawi and the one linked to the Regional GIS program (funds from ECHO, UNDP, UNICEF).

• Conduct under the supervision of the country director GIS related survey/ies, analysis and reporting.
• Statistic Data analysis.
• Produce detailed and quality maps in various format.
• Contribute to development / enhancement of GIS databases used / developed by COOPI and or partners.
• Provide on-going and on field support to COOPI's team and COOPI's partner in all activities related to GIS.
• Provide basic training to various NGOS and other institution staff.
• Support / enhance the file keeping system of GIS related information.
• Database programming (all COOPIs output must be rigorously open source and free software when delivered to the supervisor)
• Technical support to the development of WEB GIS structures.
• Support the M&E officer of COOPI to develop appropriate GIS database and maps for the M&E system.
• Support the CD to write quality report / proposal to donors.
• Represent COOPI in technical and / or institutional meetings related to GIS
• Participate to short missions outside Malawi for GIS operational activities and or meeting / workshop participation.
• Other duties assigned by the Country Director

CARANA is seeking a dynamic and innovative Chief of Party for an upcoming multi-million dollar USAID-funded agricultural and enterprise development project in Malawi. The project will aim to increase the competitiveness of Malawi's private sector, reduce poverty and increase food security through the development of competitive agricultural value chains that engage the poor.
Candidates for this position should be senior level professionals with a proven track record of successfully implementing and managing agricultural, food security, or nutrition programs in countries with a socio–cultural and economic situation similar to Malawi. The COP will be responsible for oversight of the entire project, and will be required to work with various stakeholders, including high level government and USAID officials.
Minimum Qualifications:

• Master's degree in agriculture, business, trade or other relevant graduate degree;
• At least 10 years of technical or managerial experience in value chain development, competitiveness or market information systems programs in African countries;
• Demonstrated excellent communications and writing abilities and superior interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills;
• Extensive knowledge of USAID administrative and procurement practices;
• Demonstrated experience in developing and managing alliances with the private sector and counterparts at the highest levels of government;
• Familiarity with the social-economic landscape of southeast Africa is preferred; and
  
• Previous COP experience in Africa is preferred.
